SUMMARY:  How to use ditaval to apply change bars
ISSUE:  You want to use the @status attribute to mark changed content, and render those changes using change bars.
SOLUTION:  DITA-FMx has a command to let you apply conditions based on a ditaval file. If you mark the changed and new content using the @status attribute, then when you generate a book from the DITA map (using DITA-FMx), you can run the Apply Ditaval as Conditions command and have the changed content marked with changebars.

The ditaval file should contain the following ..

   <prop att="status" val="changed" action="include" />
   <prop att="status" val="new" action="include" />

If the conditions ("status=changed" and "status=new") use the changebar format (instead of underscore, etc.), and the conditions are set to show (instead of hide), you'll get changebars.

Note that this is not really the intended use of ditavals since the @status attribute is not typically considered a "filtering" attribute .. but it does work for FM-based publishing.
